On March 15, the World Economic Forum (hereinafter referred to as WEF) unveiled the list of its “Lighthouse Factories” – 5 out of 15 are based in mainland China. Upon the list, Midea’s microwave oven factory in Shunde, Foshan became the first Foshan-based intelligent manufacturing factory to receive such honor.
"Lighthouse Factory", presented by WEF and McKinsey aims to credit enterprises taking a leading role in applying and integrating cutting-edge technologies in the 4th Industrial Revolution. A "Lighthouse Factory" usually excels in upgrading production mode, applying new technologies, innovating value chain and making disruptive changes to business model.
So far there have been 69 "Lighthouse Factories". Impressively, 2 belong to Midea Group – a microwave oven factory in Shunde, Foshan and a household air-conditioner factory in Nansha, Guangzhou, owing to the company’s strong competitive edges in intelligent manufacturing. In coming years, Midea also planned to build an electromechanical factory in Xingtan, Shunde based on the “Lighthouse Factory” standard, backed up with an investment of 3 billion yuan.
With Midea Group taking the lead, Shunde is marching ahead on a path to high-quality development. On December 25th last year, according to the 10th Plenary Session of the 13th CPC District Committee of Shunde Foshan, Shunde will build new digital infrastructure, including 5G networks, Industrial Internet, Big Data centers, to breed demonstration bases of intelligent manufacturing. Hopefully, there will be more “Lighthouse Factories" in Foshan.
